Meta platforms have come to be known to have denied any collaborations with Alphabet to use Google’s Android XR platform for the virtual and mixed reality Quest headsets.
Google recommended a partnership with Meta that is being developed for virtual reality, augmented reality as well as mixed reality headsets but didn’t receive a positive response.
This was because there is a possibility that such a collaboration could hinder the Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s aspiration to dominate the upcoming computational platform for AR, VR, and mixed reality. Reportedly, Meta has initiated discussions with firms, namely South Korea’s LG Electronics in order to explore the development of new virtual reality devices for the utilisation of Quest’s software which was indicated by undisclosed Meta insiders.
Considering Android, Google’s ambitions extend beyond a simple Meta partnership. It is hopeful that the company wants Android XR to assume a role for XR headsets, mirroring the function of its mobile operating system for smartphones. Although, achieving this mission necessitates partnerships with external hardware partners. This imperative arises from Google’s recent closures of several XR hardware projects, alongside its complete abandonment of the Google Daydream platform in 2019.
Meta is said to have collaborated with LG in order to manufacture the new release of Quest headsets which are predicted to be both, a high-end and advanced Quest Pro 2, as well as an affordable one.
