Germany’s New Sovereign AI Data Centre in Bavaria Plans to Double the Nation’s Domestic Computing Power by 2027

Germany is taking a bold and decisive step toward its own digital independence today as the innovative start-up Polarise announced a massive new sovereign AI data centre project nestled in the heart of Bavaria. This ambitious facility aims to significantly strengthen European control over critical technology infrastructure at a time when global tensions, shifting tariffs, and diverging international regulations make domestic computing power an urgent priority for the continent.

The new facility will be located in the quiet town of Amberg and will initially provide 30 megawatts of power dedicated to intense artificial intelligence workloads, which effectively doubles the current domestically-run computing capacity available within Germany’s borders. Polarise plans to officially launch this high-tech hub by the middle of 2027, ensuring that local businesses have a reliable and secure place to process their most sensitive data without relying on outside providers.

Expansion remains a core part of the company’s long-term vision because the site could eventually reach a staggering 120-megawatt capacity, putting it on a scale that rivals the massive infrastructure typically operated by global giants like Google or Amazon. Furthermore, Polarise is already a seasoned player in the industry as it currently operates thirteen other data centres across various international locations, proving they have the expertise to manage such a significant undertaking.

Financial estimates for this ambitious venture are expected to reach the triple-digit million euro range, although this figure mainly covers the primary infrastructure and does not even include the incredibly expensive AI chips required for peak performance. The final costs will ultimately depend on specific customer needs and their unique server hardware choices, yet the company notably confirmed it is building this entire project without receiving any state subsidies.

Energy management stays at the very forefront of this development strategy, especially since rising oil prices have pushed power costs to record highs and made efficiency more important than ever before. As a result, Polarise has partnered with WV Energie to create a completely sustainable power solution that includes dedicated wind and solar plants built specifically to feed the data centre’s hungry servers.

Additionally, the team will install large-scale batteries for temporary electricity storage to ensure the facility remains both efficient and environmentally conscious even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing. Recent reports from the lobby group Bitkom show that while Germany had 530 megawatts of AI capacity last year, the vast majority of those resources were still managed by non-German providers, making this new move a vital shift toward true technological sovereignty.
