In her first major role since breakout performance in Cannes hit Emilia Pérez, Karla Sofía Gascón has been cast in the Spanish-language adaptation of Bad Girls, a dark fairy tale novel by Camila Sosa Villada. Directed by Armando Bó, the film marks his directorial return following his Academy Award win for co-writing Birdman.

Gascón stars as Aunt Encarna, a tough but motherly leader of a group of trans sex workers. Her character’s life is upended when she finds an abandoned baby, leading her to adopt him, unaware of the danger it brings to her community.

The novel Bad Girls was originally published in 2019 by Villada, who is also trans. The story blends magical realism with gritty everyday street life, earning several awards, including the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Prize and the Grand Prix de L’Héroïne.

The film is a collaboration between About Entertainment, Infinity Hill, and Suma Content, with producers including Natacha Cervi, Mercedes Reincke, Axel Kuschevatzky, Cindy Teperman, and the director himself. Villada serves as executive producer along with Phin Glynn and Delfina Montecchia.

Breaking out with Emilia Pérez, Gascón won the Cannes best actress award, marking a historic first for a transgender woman. The film, also starring Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña, was Netflix’s second most–nominated movie in Globes history.

Bó co-wrote Biutiful and has directed and produced notable series like El Presidente and Cromañon. His past work has firmly established his voice in cinema. Karla Sofía Gascón’s role in Las Malas promises to further cement her reputation as a trailblazing actress in Spanish-language cinema.
