Open-Source AI Summit Abu Dhabi: Pioneering Conversations on the Future of AI

by admin

The Open-Source AI Summit Abu Dhabi, organised by the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), commenced at the St. Regis Saadiyat Island, bringing together over 300 attendees to discuss the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. The two-day event focuses on the critical dynamics between open- and closed-source AI, positioning itself as a significant contributor to global AI discourse.

H.E. Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary General of the Advanced Technology Research Council and Adviser to the UAE President, highlighted the pivotal choice between leveraging closed-source AI models, which remain under the control of their developers, and open-source models that encourage communal growth and innovation. He underscored that TII’s decision to open-source its Falcon AI models was a deliberate move to foster global collaboration and democratise AI development.

Global Experts Explore Open-Source AI Challenges and Opportunities

Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, described the summit as a milestone in global AI discussions. She emphasised that open-source initiatives, such as Falcon, unite a diverse community of scientists and developers, accelerating technological breakthroughs. Discussions also included insights from Dr. Belgacem Haba, Vice President of Adeia Corporation, who explored the implications of AI on semiconductor manufacturing, and Prof. Philip Torr from Oxford University, who advocated for open-source AI despite its inherent risks, citing long-term benefits.

Dr. Hakim Hacid, TII’s Chief Researcher, acknowledged the complexities surrounding open-source AI, including concerns over control, policy, and resource requirements. He stressed the importance of ongoing global collaboration, facilitated by events like this summit.

Upcoming sessions will feature thought leaders such as Dr. Natalia Vassilieva from Cerebras Systems and Dr. June Paik from FuriosaAI, addressing topics like sustainable AI computing and compact large language models (LLMs). TII’s Dr. Jingwei Zuo will showcase Falcon Mamba, a groundbreaking State Space Language Model launched in 2024.

The event concludes with a panel on TII’s vision for open-source AI, cementing the institute’s role in advancing open-source initiatives globally. Falcon AI models, including the highly-regarded Falcon 40B, continue to set benchmarks for open-source AI, with a new model expected by late 2024.
