On Tuesday night, the Canadian men’s football team will face a historic challenge as they compete against Argentina in the Copa America semifinals.
The match is set to kick off at 8 p.m., with fans in Canada able to watch it on TSN, while those in the United States can tune in on FS1.
This marks the first time Canada has participated in the world’s oldest running tournament, which was traditionally contested by the 10 South American countries before expanding to include 12 teams. This year, six North American countries were invited to join, with Canada being the only one still in the competition.
Tuesday’s match has generated significant buzz across Canada and is expected to see bars filled with enthusiastic Canadian supporters.
Here’s what you need to know about the game.
How did Canada advance?
Canada and Argentina were initially grouped together and faced off in their opening match of the tournament.
The Canadian team managed to hold off the world’s No. 1 football team for the first 45 minutes. However, after the break, Argentine forwards Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez each scored, securing a 2-0 victory for Argentina.
Canada’s next two games involved a bit of fortune, as both Peru and Chile had players sent off, leaving them to finish with just 10 men on the field.
Nevertheless, the Canadian squad capitalised on these opportunities, securing a 1-0 victory over Peru and holding Chile to a 0-0 draw, which enabled them to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinal round, Canada faced Venezuela. Jacob Shaffelburg gave Canada an early lead, and it seemed they would maintain this advantage until the 64th minute. At that point, Salomon Rondon scored a stunning long-range goal, looping the ball over Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau to equalise.
But Crépeau redeemed himself during the subsequent shootout, where he blocked two of Venezuela’s attempts, securing the win for Canada.
