Prime Video Secures Princess Diana Documentary Rights
Prime Video has secured the UK and Ireland rights to the highly anticipated Princess Diana documentary, bringing her intimate recordings to its streaming audience. The three-part production will carry the title Diana: Her Secret Confessions in these territories, while Cineflix Rights handles international distribution under the original title, Diana Unheard. The series centres on Diana’s personal testimony and examines experiences that shaped her life within the Royal Family.
Unheard Recordings Reveal Diana’s Personal Reflections
Diana recorded the conversations secretly with James Colthurst in 1991, and these recordings later informed Andrew Morton’s influential 1992 biography, Diana: Her True Story. Although earlier productions featured selected excerpts, including a 2017 National Geographic documentary, Love Monday TV gained access to the complete collection. The production team worked with Colthurst, Morton, and publisher Michael O’Mara to obtain approximately five hours of audio for the series.
Documentary Examines Diana’s Royal Relationships
The recordings reveal Diana’s reflections on her marriage to Charles, now King Charles III, and his relationship with Camilla, now Queen. She also discusses Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, alongside her sons and other family members. These personal conversations offer audiences an opportunity to understand Diana’s experiences beyond the familiar public accounts of her life.
Producers Aim to Reframe Diana’s Story
Love Monday TV producer Kerene Barefield explained that the female-led production team wanted to challenge established portrayals of Diana. She argued that powerful men have frequently shaped public discussions about the princess, even decades after her death. By placing Diana’s complete recordings at the centre, the documentary aims to present her as a woman determined to shape her own narrative. Interviews with people who knew her will also provide additional context for audiences.
