The University of York is set to establish its first international campus in Mumbai, marking a strategic move in its global expansion journey. This development was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Government of Maharashtra during the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES). The initiative was also discussed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscoring its national significance.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Charlie Jeffery, highlighted Mumbai’s infrastructure developments—including its growing metro network and second airport—as key advantages. He also pointed to Maharashtra’s economic ecosystem, which complements York’s core academic and research priorities, particularly in creative industries and agri-tech. With regulatory approvals underway, the university aims to design a curriculum aligned with its UK offerings while tailoring it to local aspirations and industry demands.
Academic Offerings and Global Talent Integration
The Mumbai campus will initially offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in fields such as Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Business, Economics, and the Creative Industries. These programmes are being shaped in collaboration with industry stakeholders to enhance student employability and career readiness in high-demand sectors.
The University plans to begin with a cohort of around 200 students, with a vision to grow the student base to 3,000–4,000 within five years. In terms of staffing, York plans to draw support from its UK academic base initially, before recruiting an international mix of faculty based in Mumbai. The university aims to attract educators from India, as well as regions like the Gulf and Southeast Asia, to foster diverse perspectives in its teaching environment.
York has also earmarked scholarships for over 10% of its students, with future plans to expand this through corporate and philanthropic partnerships. Additionally, collaborations like the recently signed MoU with the Entrepreneurs Association of Mumbai will support student placements and entrepreneurship efforts—mirroring York’s commitment to blending academia with industry insights.
