A Landmark Collaboration for Higher Education
The University of Surrey has announced its plans to establish an International Branch Campus (IBC) in Gujarat’s GIFT City, marking a significant step in expanding transnational education. This ambitious initiative is in partnership with GUS Global Services (GGS), a leading international education group, and was officially revealed at the QS India Summit 2025 in Goa by Professor GQ Max Lu, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, and Dr. Sharad Mehra, Regional CEO – Asia and Australia at Global University Systems (GUS).
The proposed campus is currently in an advanced stage of development and awaits approval from the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA). A crucial meeting between representatives from the University of Surrey, GGS, and IFSCA officials is set for January 31 to advance the regulatory process. Once operational, the campus is expected to strengthen GIFT City’s reputation as a global hub for higher education.
Bridging UK-India Educational Collaboration
The University of Surrey’s IBC at GIFT City will offer specialised programs in business, international finance, computer science, and cybersecurity, bringing British academic excellence to one of India’s rapidly emerging financial and technological centers. Under the partnership, the University of Surrey will oversee academic operations and quality assurance, while GGS will manage student enrollment, strategic advisory services, and campus administration, ensuring smooth execution.
This initiative aligns with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and reflects the broader vision of enhancing UK-India educational collaborations. Professor Max Lu highlighted the transformative nature of this endeavor, emphasising its role in redefining global education by fostering academic excellence in a highly dynamic environment. Aaron Etingen, Executive Chairman and CEO of Global University Systems, described the initiative as a landmark moment in transnational education.
As discussions progress, delegations from the University of Surrey and GGS are set to visit GIFT City to further advance the project. Once completed, the campus is expected to contribute to a highly skilled workforce, reinforcing India’s position as a global knowledge leader.
