Sony’s SPUMC (Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters) appears set to end with Kraven The Hunter. Despite not yet hitting cinemas, JC Chandor’s gritty, hard-R rated film starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson is reportedly the final installment of Sony’s attempts to create a shared universe from Spider-Man’s rogues gallery. The Wrap’s recent report sheds light on why the SPUMC well has run dry. The studio’s lack of quality control and the failure to deliver compelling stories led to the collapse of the franchise. Movies like Madame Web and Morbius received poor reception and performed weakly at the box office, making a shared universe without Spider-Man appear increasingly unlikely.
“Sometimes you get movies no one asked for, like Madame Web,” said a Sony insider. “It’s a no-win scenario when a movie fails to meet expectations.” Sony’s push to build a Sinister Six team-up movie with characters like Knull in Venom: The Last Dance felt more like an afterthought than a setup, further highlighting the shortcomings of the SPUMC.
However, there is still hope for Spider-Man’s future. The studio is focusing on the next Spider-Man film, with Spider-Noir currently in production and the highly anticipated conclusion of the Spider-Verse animated series, Beyond The Spider-Verse, still to come. Despite the premature end of the SPUMC, Sony remains committed to Marvel’s most iconic character, Spider-Man, ensuring he continues to be the cornerstone of its future projects.
As Sony wraps up its shared universe experiment, all eyes are now on Spider-Man’s next chapter in the MCU. The future of Marvel on screen may lie solely with Tom Holland and the vibrant world of Spider-Man. Sony’s push to create a coherent cinematic universe without Spider-Man has clearly fallen short.
