New Zealand’s International Education Sector Witnesses Strong Recovery

New Zealand’s international education sector is showing robust recovery, with a 24% year-on-year growth in enrolments and a 6% increase compared to 2023, according to data released by the New Zealand government on December 4. This resurgence places the country’s enrolment figures just 7% below pre-pandemic levels, reflecting the sector’s resilience and appeal.

Growth Driven by Quality and Economic Impact

From January to August 2024, New Zealand recorded 73,535 international enrolments, surpassing the total enrolments for 2023 within just two terms. The rise is attributed to the country’s global reputation for providing high-quality education, a key driver highlighted by tertiary education and skills minister Penny Simmonds.

Simmonds emphasised the economic benefits of international students, noting their contributions to job creation and local businesses. With historical trends suggesting further enrolment increases by the end of 2024, she expressed optimism about the positive outcomes for education providers across the country.

The recovery extends beyond national levels, with significant regional gains reported. Regions like Gisborne saw a remarkable 126% year-on-year growth in international enrolments, Marlborough experienced a 45% increase, Hawke’s Bay grew by 28%, and Waikato saw a 26% uptick.

Sector-Specific and Demographic Insights

Universities reported a 14% increase in international enrolments year-on-year, reaching 31,345 students. Schools saw an even more significant rise, with a 33% increase to 16,815 students, including a 69% surge in primary school enrolments. Private training establishments recorded the highest growth at 80%, underscoring the sector’s expanding appeal.

Diversification in source markets is also evident. While China and India remain the dominant contributors, there is notable growth in enrolments from the US, Thailand, Germany, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines, each accounting for 3% of the total international student population.

A Promising Future

With international student numbers nearing full recovery and expected to reach pre-pandemic levels by 2025, New Zealand’s education sector is poised for sustained growth. This rebound reflects the country’s strategic focus on quality, diversity, and regional inclusion, setting a strong foundation for the future of its international education industry.
