With just days before the US presidential election, reports reveal that Chinese state-affiliated hackers attempted to intercept sensitive audio calls linked to a Trump campaign adviser. This incident has drawn the attention of the FBI and the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), which are now investigating how hackers gained unauthorized access to commercial telecommunications infrastructure.
According to reports, the breach enabled hackers to access unencrypted data, including text messages, further raising concerns over election integrity and the vulnerability of US political communications.
The Chinese embassy in Washington promptly responded, denying any awareness of such hacking activities. They emphasized that Beijing firmly opposes all forms of cyber attacks. However, despite China’s statement, this incident adds to already high tensions between the US and China, especially regarding cybersecurity and election interference. The timing and nature of the breach intensify existing fears that foreign actors are trying to influence the outcome of the election.
This isn’t the first foreign cyber incident involving US campaigns this year. Earlier, Iranian hackers reportedly managed to breach Trump’s campaign infrastructure, with the US Justice Department subsequently charging members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The department stated that the hackers intended to disrupt the upcoming election, reflecting broader international concerns over cyber-influence efforts. Furthermore, recent intelligence indicates that Chinese hackers also attempted to access phones used by individuals associated with Kamala Harris’s campaign.
These incidents paint a concerning picture of election vulnerability, highlighting the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures as the country heads into Election Day.
