Bangkok, Phuket, and Ko Samui also earn high global recognition
Thailand’s northern jewel, Chiang Mai, has been named the No. 1 City in Asia in the prestigious Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2025, reaffirming its place as a cultural and natural treasure. With a remarkable Reader Score of 91.94, Chiang Mai also claimed the No. 2 spot globally, making it one of the world’s most beloved travel destinations.
Renowned for its ancient temples like Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, vibrant night markets, mountain vistas, and ethical elephant experiences, Chiang Mai was praised by readers for its “super cordial people and amazing food.” The recognition solidifies its status not only as Asia’s best city but also as a destination that balances authenticity, hospitality, and sustainable tourism.
Both Chiang Mai and Thailand’s bustling capital, Bangkok, were honoured in the Travel + Leisure Hall of Fame, recognising their consistent appearance among the world’s top destinations over the years.
Bangkok, Phuket, and Ko Samui Also Shine
Bangkok earned high accolades as well, placing No. 3 in Asia and No. 4 globally, with a Reader Score of 91.34. The city was lauded for its vibrant mix of tradition and modernity, described by one traveller as “the most fascinating, beautiful, and exciting city.” With its iconic temples, dynamic street food scene, and electric nightlife, Bangkok continues to capture the imagination of travellers worldwide.
Thailand’s appeal extended to the island category too. Phuket and Ko Samui ranked fourth and fifth respectively among the Best Islands in Asia. Phuket earned a Reader Score of 89.47 for its pristine beaches and luxury resorts, while Ko Samui followed closely with 89.31, celebrated for its laid-back charm and tropical beauty.
TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool expressed pride in Thailand’s continued recognition, stating: “Chiang Mai’s top ranking, along with the strong performances by Bangkok, Phuket, and Ko Samui, speaks to the richness and diversity of experiences our country offers.”
The World’s Best Awards are based on nearly 180,000 reader submissions and over 657,000 votes, highlighting global traveller preferences in culture, cuisine, friendliness, and value.
