The app, which has been under development for nearly six years, aims to fill a critical gap in mental health care. “Even if we increased the number of therapists tenfold, it wouldn’t be enough,” said Nick Jacobson, assistant professor of data science and psychiatry at Dartmouth. With millions needing support, the research team believes AI is the next step in accessible therapy.
A recent clinical study demonstrated Therabot’s effectiveness in delivering measurable improvements in mental health symptoms. Unlike many unregulated apps currently on the market, Therabot was created using ethically simulated patient-caregiver conversations—avoiding the common method of simply scraping public therapy data. This careful, research-backed development is designed to ensure both safety and trust.
As demand for digital therapy tools increases, Therabot’s developers are exploring the possibility of launching a nonprofit to provide affordable access to those unable to afford traditional therapy. Co-lead psychiatrist Michael Heinz emphasized that their focus is on care, not profit. “Rushing for monetization would risk user safety,” he said.
Mental health experts are cautiously optimistic. Vaile Wright, senior director of health care innovation at the American Psychological Association, sees potential in responsibly developed AI therapy. However, she warns that many current apps are designed to generate engagement rather than healing—especially for younger, vulnerable users.
This concern is echoed by Darlene King of the American Psychiatric Association, who noted that while AI holds great promise, more data is needed to evaluate long-term outcomes. The FDA does not currently certify such apps, though it supports their potential to expand behavioral health access.
Other developers, such as those behind the AI therapist app Panda, are also pushing for safety standards. Panda monitors signs of emotional distress and alerts users when intervention is necessary. “Unlike general AI chatbots, our system is clinically tested,” said Herbert Bay, CEO of Panda’s parent company.
Despite regulatory uncertainties, the role of AI in everyday mental health support is growing. Users like Darren, who suffers from PTSD, report real comfort from AI chatbots during moments of distress. “It works for me. I’d recommend it,” he shared.
As mental health challenges escalate globally, AI therapy tools like Therabot may soon become a standard option—offering round-the-clock support grounded in science and ethics.
