Alaska Airlines announced on Tuesday its plans to launch new international routes to Tokyo and Seoul starting next year. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to boost its global reach and strengthen its position in the international market.
The new services will begin with flights from Seattle to Tokyo’s Narita International Airport in May, followed by Seattle to Seoul in October. This move aligns with Alaska’s goal to serve at least a dozen international destinations by 2030. The acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines earlier this year for $1 billion plus debt will also contribute to greater operational efficiency, saving the company at least $500 million by 2027.
In addition to these route expansions, Alaska will introduce a new premium co-branded credit card, similar to successful offerings from other airlines. This move is expected to attract additional passengers and boost profitability. To enhance shareholder value, the airline plans to spend $1 billion on stock buybacks, making existing shares more valuable.
Strong demand for leisure travel in November and December has prompted Alaska to raise its fourth-quarter earnings outlook. The airline now expects to earn between 40 to 50 cents per share, up from an earlier forecast of 20 to 40 cents per share. This announcement follows similar upgrades by other major airlines like Southwest and American Airlines, highlighting a robust recovery in travel demand.
By efficiently combining with Hawaiian Airlines and expanding its international network, Alaska Airlines is poised for significant growth. The airline’s proactive measures—like route expansions, a new premium credit card, and stock buybacks—are set to drive future profitability.
