US Invests $1 Billion to Fight Bird Flu Crisis

by admin

The United States will spend up to $1 billion to combat bird flu and stabilize rising egg prices. Since 2022, the outbreak has killed 166 million chickens and affected nearly 1,000 dairy herds. The virus has also infected almost 70 people, with one confirmed fatality. The government aims to prevent further spread and reduce the economic strain on farmers.

The USDA will allocate $500 million for free biosecurity audits to help farms strengthen disease prevention measures. Another $400 million will increase compensation rates for farmers forced to cull infected flocks. The funding will come from the Commodity Credit Corporation, ensuring immediate financial support for affected poultry farms. Officials are prioritizing rapid response strategies to control the outbreak.

Experts are debating the use of bird flu vaccines for chickens. While some argue they could slow the spread, others worry about trade restrictions if vaccinated poultry is rejected by global markets. The USDA is studying potential solutions but has not approved vaccine use yet. Industry leaders have welcomed the cautious approach, emphasizing the need for further research.

To tackle record-high egg prices, the US will increase imports while limiting exports. Turkey has committed to exporting 420 million eggs this year, significantly boosting domestic supply. The surge in prices has led to consumer panic-buying, worsening shortages. Economists warn that demand will continue rising unless supply stabilizes.

In May, the Biden administration allocated $800 million to manage bird flu outbreaks in livestock. About $450 million remains available for emergency response efforts. Government officials are closely monitoring the crisis to prevent further economic and agricultural damage. If necessary, additional funding may be introduced to support farmers and maintain food security.
