Spotify Rolls Out Messages Feature for Free and Premium Users

Spotify has unveiled a new Spotify messages feature designed to enhance user engagement and discovery. The feature allows free and premium users aged 16 and older to share songs, podcasts, and audiobooks directly within the app. The rollout begins this week on mobile devices in select markets. 

The Spotify messages feature enables one-on-one conversations between users. Music lovers can send tracks, reply with emojis, and hold text chats. With this addition, the company aims to make recommendations more personal and increase discovery through word-of-mouth sharing. This approach also supports creators by helping them reach new audiences. 

Conversations through the Spotify messages feature can be initiated with contacts users have previously engaged with. These may include friends from shared playlists, Jams, Blends, or members of Duo and Family plans. A message request must be accepted before a chat begins, ensuring user safety and choice. Once accepted, participants can freely exchange music and messages. 

Accessing the new Spotify messages feature is simple. Users can tap their profile photo in the top-left corner of the app to open the tool. Some users may also see suggested contacts based on past interactions. This seamless design ensures quick sharing without the need for external platforms. 

The new tool works alongside existing sharing options. Users can continue sharing content via Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, and Snapchat. However, the Spotify messages feature creates a private, in-app channel that deepens connections between listeners. 

This launch marks the return of a concept first introduced years ago. A similar messaging option was removed in 2017 due to low engagement. However, with nearly 700 million monthly active users today, Spotify is betting on a stronger response. By reviving messaging, the company seeks to strengthen loyalty and drive new growth. 

Competition within the streaming industry remains intense. Rivals such as Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube continue to expand aggressively.
