India and Russia Explore Visa-Free Travel Agreement

Indian citizens may soon enjoy visa-free travel to Russia as both nations work towards implementing a bilateral agreement expected to take effect in the spring of 2025. The initiative aims to boost tourism and strengthen bilateral ties by easing visa restrictions for group tourist exchanges. This development follows a steady rise in Indian travelers visiting Russia and reflects the success of similar visa-free agreements that Moscow has implemented with China and Iran.

E-Visas and Rising Indian Tourism

Since August 2023, Indian travelers have been eligible for e-visas to Russia, which are processed within four days. These e-visas have significantly simplified travel procedures for Indian citizens, with India ranking among the top five nations for e-visas issued in 2023. Over 9,500 e-visas were granted to Indian travelers last year, according to sources.

Tourism data shows a growing interest in Russia among Indian travelers. In 2023, over 60,000 Indians visited Moscow, marking a 26% increase from the previous year. Additionally, India ranked third among non-CIS countries for business tourism in early 2024, with approximately 1,700 e-visas issued in the first quarter alone.

Currently, Indian passport holders must obtain a visa from the Russian Embassy or Consulates, a process that has been described as lengthy and cumbersome. The proposed visa-free system is expected to ease these challenges and attract more Indian visitors to Russia for business, tourism, and cultural exchanges.

Enhancing Global Mobility for Indian Passport Holders

India already enjoys visa-free travel privileges to 62 countries, including popular destinations like Indonesia, Maldives, and Thailand. Ranked 82nd on the Henley Passport Index 2024, Indian passport holders benefit from growing global mobility options.

The proposed visa-free agreement with Russia could further enhance the value of Indian passports while fostering closer bilateral ties. As Moscow looks to replicate its successful visa-free initiatives with China and Iran, the potential agreement with India promises to boost tourism and strengthen diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations. This initiative marks a significant step in fostering connectivity and collaboration between India and Russia.
