UN Calls for Global AI Fund to Support Developing Nations

by admin

The United Nations has proposed the creation of a global artificial intelligence (AI) fund, urging both governments and private companies to contribute. This fund would provide developing nations with essential AI technologies, training, and resources, ensuring they are not left behind in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The recommendation comes from the UN Secretary-General’s high-level AI advisory body, which emphasised the importance of inclusivity in AI development.

The proposed fund aims to provide developing nations with access to AI models, computing power, and training programs. These resources are critical for helping these countries achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as eradicating poverty and improving education. The fund would address the growing gap between wealthier nations that are advancing in AI and those that lack the means to invest in this transformative technology.

Avoiding Past Mistakes: The Need for AI Inclusion

Dame Wendy Hall, a professor of computer science at the University of Southampton and a member of the UN’s AI advisory body, highlighted the risk of repeating the mistakes made in the climate crisis. She stressed that developing nations need support to build AI infrastructure and expertise.

“If we don’t address the global AI fund now, we risk repeating the pattern seen with climate change, where developed countries race ahead while others fall behind,” Hall stated. This warning underscores the need for immediate action to ensure that all countries can benefit from AI advancements.

Establishing Fair AI Governance

The UN report also calls for the creation of an international scientific panel on AI, which would provide annual updates on AI’s capabilities, risks, and opportunities. The report warns that without a global governance framework, AI could be controlled by a small group of developers or countries, creating deep inequalities.

By advocating for regular intergovernmental dialogue, the UN seeks to foster a more equitable approach to AI governance. The goal is to ensure that AI benefits are distributed fairly and that no nation is left behind in this technological revolution.
